CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Frances Swenson

I have just returned from the Children & Youth Committee Meeting in Indianapolis. The Commission decided to continue the same three points of emphasis which are: Child Safety, Family Support, and Child Health. It is felt these three cover most of the programs we have.

Several of the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation grant recipients for 2007-2008 gave reviews of their accomplishments and asked for our continuing support. The American Legion Children’s Home in Ponca City, OK issued an invitation to visit them at anytime. They do have a special American Legion Day April 25, 2009. The Special Olympics and Children’s Miracle Network both asked us to monitor our donations and that if we give at a telethon to be sure to designate The American Legion so they can account for all our donations. If you are dealing with a hospital, be sure to designate your donation is to be credited to The American Legion.

The Child Welfare Foundation will have some items featured at the National Convention, so make sure you visit their booth. Also several of the organizations who have received grants will have booths as well.

Last October the National Executive Committee approved our resolution to adopt Special Olympics as a National Children & Youth program. In addition, we will participate in their programs to assist in providing year round sports training as well as athletic competitions to millions of children and adults with intellectual disabilities in the United States and around the world. We urge all Posts, Districts, and Departments to work with and support the Special Olympic Program in whatever capacity they so choose to increase the quality of life for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Another very interesting grant in 2009 that was reported on was to "Give Kids the World" of Kissimmee, Florida. This grant is to publish handbooks "Dream and Go Guides". This is a handbook for happiness. The guides explain the one week stay of the children with life threatening illnesses and their families is the vacation of a lifetime that provides joy and memories that endure long term.

Please continue spreading the word on Poison Control. Several Districts have had that program at their Convention, and I feel it would be beneficial to get the program into our schools.
