DEPARTMENT SERVICE OFFICER
DAMON CHRISTENSEN
The increasing of wounded warriors into the VA System has put a demand on more volunteers needed in the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Program at our VA hospitals and other locations. The American Legion has been a supporter and active participant in the VAVS program since its inception. The success of the VAVS program is due to the enthusiastic efforts on the part of many organizations such as The American Legion, and especially through the efforts of individuals displaying determination and dedication to helping veterans use the VA services.
By becoming a volunteer you may be assisting veteran patients by augmenting the staff in VA Medical Centers, Nursing Homes, Hospice Programs, Foster Care, Community Base Outpatient Centers, and Veterans Outreach Centers. An individual may find it a rewarding opportunity as a volunteer to work in a Poly Trauma Center. The VA has four regional Poly Trauma Centers and 17 Network Poly Trauma Centers. There are many needs these wounded warriors and their family have.
As a volunteer working in the difference Medical Centers your opportunities may include making coffee, answering phones, scheduling appointments, escort patients, a food court ambassador, information desk worker, shuttle driver or helping veteran’s with their history projects. The opportunity’s are endless as a volunteer.
