American Legion's Boys State of Kansas

The essence of Boys' State is a program in which participants learn about government by becoming a mock, or virtual, government. This technique, which we refer to as learning-by-doing, was the goal Legionnaires Hayes Kennedy and Harrold L. Card wanted to reach when they founded Boys' State in Illinois in 1935.

In this city on July 17, 1925, by action of the South Dakota Department of The American Legion, the nationwide organization of Legion Junior Baseball was first proposed as a program of service to the youth of America. Those words are inscribed on a marble monument in the community of Milbank, South Dakota, as a reminder of the beginning of this fine Americanism program. The program's years of existence can be explained best by a portion of that inscription: "A program of service to the youth of America." Since its beginning, over one million young men have played Legion Baseball.

Son's of the American Legion

The Sons of The American Legion is more than just membership. On all levels, they have worked together with The American Legion to promote a wide variety of programs, including assisting the local posts in all activities, Veterans programs (VAVS), VA home and hospital volunteering, Children & Youth activities, and fund raising.

CADET LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

The  Cadet Law Enforcement Academy, co-sponsored by the Kansas American Legion, Auxiliary and Kansas Highway Patrol will be held at the Highway Patrol Training Center in Salina, June 13-18, 2010.  Deadline for applications was March 31st and the $300 sponsor fee must accompany the application. Information for the Cadet Law Enforcement program and student applications were mailed in early December to all American Legion Posts, Auxiliary Units, and high schools throughout the state.

CLEA is not a recruitment device for law enforcement. Instead it offers high school juniors the opportunity to gain knowledge regarding training and responsibilities of all law enforcement officials. Upon graduation students should better understand, respect and appreciate law enforcement personnel at all levels.

To qualify for the Academy, applicants must be High School Juniors and must have a "C+" average scholastically for Sophomore and first semester of their Junior year, and be physically able to participate in all activities. Qualified instructors from the Highway Patrol, KBI, FBI and other law enforcement agencies are used throughout the week of instruction.
